Important Tips to Extend The Lifetime of A Turbocharger

Time: 2022-04-18

Turbochargers have been used in many types of automobiles. It makes up for the inherent deficiencies of some naturally aspirated engines, and increase the engine’s output power by more than 30% without changing the exhaust volume. Many automobile manufacturing companies use supercharging technology to improve the output power of the engine and realize the high performance of the car or truck.

Since the turbocharger is so important, what should we do to prolong the turbo’s lifetime? Here’s some important tips.

Don’t start the vehicle immediately

After the engine is started, it should be allowed to be idle for a period of time to allow the lubricating oil to fully lubricate the bearings before the supercharger rotor runs at high speed, especially in winter. Do not slam the accelerator after starting, or you may damage the turbocharger’s oil seal.

Do not turn off the engine immediately

When the engine is working, some oil is supplied to the turbocharger rotor bearing for lubrication and cooling. When the running engine is suddenly stopped, the oil pressure drops to zero rapidly. The heat of the turbo parts is transmitted to the middle of the turbocharger and cannot be quickly taken away. At the same time, the rotor is still rotating at a high speed under the action of inertia and can cause the oil retained in the turbocharger to overheat and damage the bearings and shafts.

Keep the turbocharger clean

When disassembling the turbocharger, remember to plug each pipe joint with a clean cloth to prevent debris from falling into the turbocharger and damaging the rotor. During maintenance, pay attention not to collide and damage the impeller. If the impeller needs to be replaced, it should be put on to a dynamic balance test. After reassembly is complete, don’t forget to remove the blockage.

Remember to clean up the lubricating oil line

Since the turbocharger often works at high temperature, its lubricating oil pipeline is subject to high temperature, and the oil is prone to partial coking, which will cause insufficient lubrication of the turbocharger bearing and damage it. Therefore, the lubricating oil line should be cleaned after a period time of working.

Frequent inspection

Before starting or turning off the vehicle, check the connection of each pipe to prevent it from loosing or falling off, which may cause the failure of the turbocharger or the short-circuit air into the cylinder.

Now we know how to use a turbocharger correctly, but what if some problem happens? How to identify and solve the problems? We will continue to talk about that in the next article.
